Man and Place – Salamina

Man and Place – Salamina

The Salamina Photographic Club - Photometrisis presents, with the financial support and auspices of the Ministry of Culture, the group photography exhibition “Man and Place – Salamina” curated by Hypatia Kornarou. Curator’s Note The purpose of the Photographic Exhibition “Man and Place – Salamina” is none other than the introduction of the island to new social groups that ignore its importance as well as the strengthening of expressiveness through the art-culture diptych of the local society. Salamis people define themselves through visual communication. The themes and ideas of the photographs vary. Contemporary social and environmental issues, autobiographical approaches, customs and traditions in a modern Salamis, everyday life as well as experiential approaches to the history of the island by its residents are presented. Emotions are naturally expressed in the art of photography. In a society, art channels the seeds for education and freedom of expression. The photographs, which have been taken in 2024, constitute the collective essence of the Applied Conceptual Photography Seminar with Lecturer Hypatia Kornarou. The place and the modern people of Salamina tell the stories of the past and the present through the visual narrative contained in the conceptual recording. Its people are surrounded by the sea. It is the sea that encompasses every aspect of Salamina with the saltiness of a collective memory in each of its narratives. It is the journey that occurs when you approach or depart from its port. Those photographed are residents of Salamina who participated voluntarily. All shots were taken only in places on the island. In the development of the Photographic Impression of an Idea, the effort has often focused on highlighting the cultural heritage of the place. Human stories are revived, describing the conditions, confessing memories and emotions. However, they bear witness to the past history of an island that has its roots in antiquity. Modern young people seek knowledge about the customs and traditions of the island as well as about the people who stood out in its history. Thus, they listen to the pulse and declare themselves present in the activities that connect the past with the present. Curation: Hypatia Kornarou Alongside the exhibition, a video art documentary will be screened, co-produced by Photometrisis, Hypatia Kornarou and Nikolas Agapiou, about Salamis and its people.
